Food security is far from being reached in the Palestinian refugee camps and getting enough food is far from being their only problem. Overcrowded housing, poor infrastructure, lack of schools and dependency on international donations are other issues that they have to deal with.
Nevertheless, different organisations are helping to empower Palestinians and especially women. Farming and land are linked to the history and identity of the Palestinian people. Therefore, rooftop gardening has become a popular form of resistance. With growing their own food, people demonstrate that they control the means of securing sustainably and that they can procure their own necessities of life – food. They create their own land in their continued struggle towards freedom.
